What is FRCEM ?

It is designed for doctors who have completed advanced training in emergency medicine and demonstrated the knowledge, clinical expertise, leadership, and professional competencies required to practice independently as emergency medicine specialists.

Achieving the FRCEM qualification signifies excellence in emergency medicine and is widely recognized in the UK and internationally. It enhances career opportunities for consultant and senior specialist positions, supports professional advancement, and reflects a commitment to delivering high standards of patient care, clinical leadership, education, and research in emergency medicine.

To obtain the FRCEM (Fellowship of the Royal College of Emergency Medicine) qualification, candidates must complete approved higher training in Emergency Medicine or demonstrate equivalent competencies through an approved alternative route. During this process, doctors are required to successfully complete the FRCEM examinations, which assess advanced clinical knowledge, emergency care management, critical decision-making and professional skills in accordance with the Royal College of Emergency Medicine (RCEM) standards.

Step 1: Complete a Medical Degree

Obtain a recognized medical qualification (MBBS or equivalent) and full medical registration.

Step 2: Gain Clinical Experience

Complete internship/foundation training and gain experience in emergency medicine and related specialties.

Step 3: Obtain MRCEM

Successfully complete the MRCEM examination pathway:

MRCEM Primary
MRCEM SBA
MRCEM OSCE

Step 4: Enter Higher Specialty Training

Enroll in an approved Emergency Medicine higher specialty training programme (or an equivalent recognized pathway) and develop advanced clinical, leadership and management skills.

Step 5: Pass the FRCEM Examinations

Successfully complete the required FRCEM examinations, which assess advanced knowledge, clinical decision-making and specialist competencies in emergency medicine.

Step 6: Complete Training Requirements

Fulfil all RCEM curriculum competencies, workplace-based assessments, portfolio requirements and annual progression reviews.

Step 7: Complete All FRCEM Requirements

Successfully complete all required FRCEM examinations, approved Emergency Medicine training, workplace-based assessments, and competency requirements set by the Royal College of Emergency Medicine (RCEM). This demonstrates that the doctor has met the professional and clinical standards expected of an Emergency Medicine specialist in the UK.

Step 8: Award of Fellowship (FRCEM)

After successfully fulfilling all examination, training, and competency requirements, the Royal College of Emergency Medicine (RCEM) awards the Fellowship of the Royal College of Emergency Medicine (FRCEM). This fellowship recognizes that the doctor has achieved the standard required for independent specialist practice in Emergency Medicine in the UK.
